WHO WANTS TO BE A DJ?

Jon Dent aka THE DARK ONE has been one of my best friends for over 10 years since we met at a DDR tournament. He used to listen to a lot of hip hop as well as having a fondness for electronic music which, like myself, he earned from DDR. One day he decided to listen to Incubus to see "what the big deal was." He listened to the whole album from start to finish. When it was done, he took all his rap CDs and just....threw them away. Notorious for being that crazy dude that makes a whole bunch of noise and blows speakers, when we discovered Camo & Krooked on the Gran Turismo 5 soundtrack, things took a turn for DRUM & BASS. After hanging out with me long enough, he ended up toying with my gear, playing at house parties, and recording mixes. Now he's getting gigs. He's not the type to plan things like this.

Miles Vinson aka Myuhlz aka Secretary has been under my wing since 2007 (I think). He just started coming around one day and never left, like a lost puppy. He was serious about wanting to learn to spin and loved to play around with my equipment. I taught him everything I know (almost) and he's done a lot of his own homework and has come quite a long way. Often referring to himself as my personal assistant (hence, secretary) he tags along to a lot of my gigs and a lot of times spins with me on the Wednesday Night Crush. His influences are John Bourke, Justice, Boyz Noize, and a lot of other artists on the Ed Banger label. He loves to play moombah (his current love), dubstep, and electro. Miles is now **GRADUATED** and persuing a solo gig.

Keith Mayfield aka Mr Kowz is a guy I played a lot of DDR with in my teen years. He was on the Team Illucia DDR gang and one day randomly disappeared off the face of the planet (also known as my life). Out of nowhere one day he messaged me on the screen name he's always had--on my new screen name. He started coming around and expressed his enthusiastic interest in electronic music and DJing. When he got a sweet monopoly roll and ended up with a loan error in his favor, he picked up some gear and hijacked a portion of my music library. While he may be pretty green, he's very enthusiastic and on his way up through the ranks. He was into trance at first, but he also likes the energy of house and drum & bass. Keith is not so much of a DJ anymore since he has pursued the arts of marriage and getting a real job.

Want to be a student? Unfortunately, I don't have the time or the patience to teach anyone else. I've had people tell me they want to learn, never stick to it, or never practice, get drunk all the time instead. I'd be more than happy to give advice (I've got a lot of it), and I've considered giving DJ lessons, but I haven't put a price on it, nor do I really care to bother teaching someone else. DJing is VERY COMPETITIVE, so unless you are serious, you won't get anywhere. If you're just in it for fame/money/popularity, know that unless you are a HUGE FUCKING AUDIO NERD you aren't going to get any of that; you'll just be an attention whore saying HEY! HEY YOU! LOOK AT ME! I HAVE TURNTABLES! I CAN GO WICKA-WICKA! LISTEN TO MY MUSIC! The world has more than enough of those douchebags.

If you're real though, I highly recommend picking up this book. I've referred to it as my "bible" before. It's called How to DJ RIGHT. You can probably find it at your local combination book store and smuggy coffee house.
